Meeting of the Board and Society
August 1, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm EDT
We will have special meeting of Historical Society’s Board and general membership on Tuesday, Aug. 1st at 7:00 PM in the Phillipston Congregational Church vestry.
Absolutely one-of-a-kind tractor made from a 1926 Model T Ford. Designed and built by the Highway Department of Phillipston, Massachusetts (thus the orange pain remnants) as a winter project in the late 1930s/early 1940s, this tractor integrates a McCormick-Deering horse-drawn mower with a Model TT Ford truck. Exceptionally low gearing with 2 transmissions (standard Model T Ford and a 1920s Chevrolet transmission) coupled to a 2-speed, worm-drive Ruckstell accessory Ford truck rear end. The sickle bar mower is cog-driven off the rear wheels. Not your ordinary doodlebug.
Tractor was used by the Phillipston Highway Department to mow the sides of secondary roads and highways until she was retired in the mid-1960s. Subsequently sold at a town auction, the tractor was driven from the auction to the nearby town of Barre, Massachusetts (15 miles) where she remained parked in a cow shed for the next 50 years.
Please join us at the August 1st meeting.
